Storm Reports, 12-12-07: Hutchinson, KS

Wow. I guess Hutch got creamed. Found out today that my two aunts, Marge Ann and Bobbie, have been without power for the past three days. The grove out back of their house has taken a beating (what trees havent?), a tree fell through part of the barn, and through part of their back porch. My grandma told me that the other night, a branch fell across some powerlines and made the transformer explode, scareing the crap out of Bobbie. At least they have a fireplace...

I apologize for the video being slightly lop-sided, I had my camera on my tripod and it wasn't quite level, and i couldn't fix that for some odd reason

I had alot of fun editing this, if you speed it up 4x and mute the sound, it looks like Im going 80 on the Hwy, and 60 in town. Add the appropriate sound fx (screeching, for when i turn a corner), it makes for great entertainment.

Winter Wonderland

I saw today on ST that there is going to be another winter snowstorm, and this one is predicted to be worse then the last one that went through:


Conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for a MAJOR AND PROLONGED PRECIPITATION EVENT over the entire outlook area this weekend; including the possibility for SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATIONS. Arctic air is expected to surge south across the plains and into the area this Friday; intersecting a stationary front over Southern Missouri. This front will serve as the focus for several rounds of moderate to heave precipitation from late Friday through possibly Tuesday as a powerful storm system remains locked over the Southwestern states. As a very warm and unusually moist air mass spreads Northward above the shallow arctic air mass already in place near the surface, SIGNIFICANT ICE ACCUMULATIONS could result. Across far Southern portions of the outlook area, prolonged heavy rainfall could lead to rapid river rises and possible flooding into early next week.

Well, there definitely looks to be another storm for the upcoming weekend. Another icing event may unfold for somebody. There are a lot of things that can change by then. There's two systems that will lay down some snow before this one arrives, so that may end up having at least a minor impact on where this storm tracks. Also, having a snowfield in place will surely have an impact on where the edge of the arctic air entrenches in. It sure looks like someone may end up with an ice storm though, with the shallow layer of arctic air in place near or over the snowfield, and strong S/SW flow just above the surface feeding in the moisture and warmer air. The severity of the icing will depend on whether or not any one location can stay in the balance of the arctic air at the surface, and WAA regime just off the surface.

I will update as more info becomes available.
